Metric: 3 in 10 households have cut the landline

September 26, 2008

According to the National Health Interview Survey, conducted by the U.S. Center for Disease Control, about three in 10 households either only use mobile phones or rarely take calls on their landlines. During the second half of last year, 16 percent of households only had mobiles, while 13 percent had mobiles and landlines but took nearly all calls on their mobiles. Wireless-only houses grew 2 percent between the first and second half of 2007. In early 2004, only 5 percent of households only had mobile phones. The survey also found that low-income people were more likely to not have landlines and those in mobile phone-only units tended to live with unrelated roommates in rented apartments. The survey involved 13,083 people who were interviewed between July and December last year.

FCC votes to resurrect public-safety network idea

September 17, 2008

The Federal Communications Commission unanimously decided to resurrect plans to create a nationwide emergency communications network after the D-block 700 MHz auction failed to garner a company willing to build a nationwide broadband network for both commercial and public-safety users.

The commission is now seeking public input on how it can modify this plan and make it more attractive to an operator. It also wants to know whether the concept should be scrapped altogether and the D block be auctioned for commercial use.

After the agency’s 5-0 vote on the D block, Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) introduced legislation to authorize $4 million to begin funding the Public Safety Spectrum Trust Corp., the 700 MHz public-safety broadband licensee that would partner with a winning commercial D-block bidder under the shared wireless broadband network model.

Bush lets Americans send cell phones to Cuba

September 10, 2008

President George Bush is easing restrictions and allowing Americans to send cell phones to their families in Cuba. The president’s statement follows Cuban announcements that citizens there would be allowed to own cell phones and computers, and that DVDs and toasters would be available in coming years. It’s expected to take effect in a few weeks but it is uncertain whether the cell phones will work there and how much wireless service will cost.

The president argued for political change in the country as well, saying Cubans should be allowed to “speak freely in public” and “stop worrying about whether they have bread every day.”
